SS 301: One Time Payment

This course explores the writings of Guru Gobind Singh (1666–1708) — the martial poetry of the Anandpur darbar and its celebrated retellings of the Goddess Chandi's battles.

To unpack these compositions we will move from the Guru Granth Granth's conceptions of the Divine, into the literary court of the Tenth Guru, through the Chandi compositions themselves, and across three centuries of Sikhs debating what these texts mean — reading precolonial sources alongside the best of modern scholarship, all in English translation.
